PROGRESSIVE CATTLEMEN
Jackson’s -<> J Ranch is honored to offer an age dispersion of our five through ten year old cows in conjunction with the Schiefelbein family annual production sale.
We purchased our first Schiefelbein bulls 18 years ago when the family held their first production sale in South Dakota. At the time of that purchase we were a purebred Angus breeder but wanted to pursue a new marketing philosophy called “value based marketing.” The program was being promoted as the real value of a carcass was how it graded, on a yield and quality grade basis. With the contribution of outstanding genetics from the Schiefelbein program we have attained some outstanding results.

What does this mean to a cow calf producer? Additional carcass premiums of $100-$150 per head. Combine those carcass values with premiums for age and source verification, BQA, and an all natural program and you have added a potential $150 or more to each and every calf harvested. The cows we are selling can and have done this repeatedly.
Why are we selling this group of cows? Two reasons; one is we have reached the age to slow down and secondly, we have always leased additional grass to summer part of the cow head. Dispersing this age group of cows will enable us to run the remaining cows on the home ranch.
Let me tell you about the cows. Every cow was born on this ranch and every cow of these age groups is selling. The cows are all black with an occasional black blaze or brockel face. Frank Schiefelbein has always encouraged producers and we can prove him correct in that you need to have some continental cross to make a more efficient feedlot animal. The cows will carry one quarter to three eights black Simmental influence. There is approximately 40 head in each age group except the nine & ten year olds. Our practice is to keep about 50 head of replacement heifers each year, selected from 160 heifer mates. The cows have been poured with Dectomax and given their Preg Guard 10 vaccination. They are bred to start calving on April 7th. The fall pregnancy check called this group of cows approximately 70% first cycle calvers. I think you will find the temperament of these cows to be very docile – that has always been one of the seven criteria we use to select replacement heifers.
Personally, I would like to see someone take these cows who is interested in pursuing the opportunities and additional income that is available in “value bred marketing.” We have several contacts and buyers who eagerly try to purchase these calves annually. I would be happy to help the purchaser of these cows market the calves in conjunction with the calves from the cows we are continuing to run on the ranch.
Thank you for your interest. I would be happy to visit with you and answer any question you may have.
Sincerely,
Bob Jackson
